On January 1, 2025, new regulations were imposed on the HVAC industry in an effort to promote environmental sustainability, improve energy efficiency and reduce its overall carbon footprint. The mandate is designed to create a cleaner, more efficient HVAC industry that can better meet the energy demands of the future.

In reducing the environmental impact of HVAC systems (air conditioners, heat pumps and other products), the US government has mandated the phase-out of high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants, such as R-410A, in favor of low-GWP alternatives (e.g., R-454B and R-32). In addition, the US government is raising energy efficiency standards by increasing the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ratings and heating performance (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor or HSPF) metrics. HVAC manufacturers will need to redesign components and system architecture to comply with the stricter regulations and new mandates. This task isn’t as easy as it sounds nor inexpensive.

New Regulations May Create Component Sourcing and Supply Chain Challenges

To comply with new regulations, control boards may require modifications and specialized components creating sourcing challenges that disrupt existing supply chains. Increased demand for these materials coupled with newly imposed tariffs, makes procurement more complex and costly, resulting in increased lead times and higher production expenses.

Avnan’s global sourcing network helps OEMs secure high-quality, compliant components that meet the evolving industry standards. Its supply chain experts can develop strategic solutions to navigate the evolving economic landscape ensuring OEMs maintain efficiency, compliance, and a competitive edge.

Testing and Certification Adds Time and Cost

Many new regulations require extensive testing and certification to ensure compliance. HVAC products, especially electronic controls, need to be tested under different operating conditions to confirm they meet energy efficiency standards. The testing process can be time-consuming and costly especially for those who don’t have the in-house capabilities.

Avnan can alleviate this process and help OEMs meet new regulatory standards by offering testing, certifications, and documentation to ensure their HVAC products are market-ready and fully compliant.

Compliance While Achieving Efficiency and Profitability

Compliance with new regulations increases costs, creates challenges with supply chains, and extends lead times for HVAC OEMs. Limited offshore supplier partnerships heighten economic risks, making it harder to balance compliance and cost-effectiveness.

Avnan helps OEMs overcome these challenges with engineering expertise, innovative solutions, and a flexible global supply chain to ensure compliance while maintaining efficiency and competitiveness.
